Gottlieben Castle in Thurgau is for sale.
Schloss Gottlieben TG opposite Constance (D), with a direct connection to the Seerhein, which connects the Upper and Lower Lakes, is looking for new owners.
In the advertisement, “a new manor who would like to restore the old substance with love and joy and live in a dream location. Owners who will make the property shine in new splendor» wanted.
Mysterious castle
However, shopping tourists and Thurgau fans who find a bargain here will be disappointed. The purchase price is steep. The owner wants 15 to 20 million francs for it. After all, there is still room for a new building with up to 1319 square meters. The castle has 32 rooms. However, it is in dire need of renovation.
According to the Swiss Monument Preservation Office, the construction of the castle was commissioned by Bishop Eberhard II of Constance in 1251. On the real estate portal of Ginesta Immobilien in Küsnacht ZH you can read that various changes of ownership followed until Jérôme Bonaparte (1784-1860), brother of Napoleon I (1769-1821), acquired the property. And rebuilt the castle in the 19th century into a chateau in the neo-Gothic style.
Moated castle with Venetian magic
In 1950, the Swiss opera singer Lisa Della Casa (1919-2012) and her husband Dragan Debeljevic (1921-2014) bought the castle. Lisa Della Casas died this Saturday for the tenth time.
Today, only daughter Vesna lives in the historic property on the Seerhein, the German regional newspaper “Südkurier” knows. Almost no one is allowed to look behind the more than 700-year-old walls. It is probably for this reason that the building is also referred to as a water castle shrouded in mystery with Venetian magic. (euros)
