In December, Zurich Airport registered a total of 17,334 flight movements. Compared to the same period last year, this is an increase of 27 percent, according to figures from the airport website evaluated by the AWP news agency. Compared to December 2020, this means a doubling.
The busiest day was December 23 with 670 aircraft movements. The least traffic was on New Year’s Eve with 483 movements.
In December, the gap to the level before the corona crisis narrowed further. In December 2019, around 2,600 or 13 percent more aircraft took off and landed in Zurich. Calculated over the year as a whole, the difference is still around 22 percent.
At the beginning of 2022, monthly traffic figures were still 40 percent below the 2019 level. In the spring, however, a clear recovery set in. In the final months of 2022, the values were still around 15 percent below the pre-crisis level.
The flight movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on statistics updated daily, in which all flights are recorded according to instrument flight rules. In addition to scheduled flights, this so-called IFR traffic also includes freight, business and private flights. The number of flight movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft handled or their utilization.
Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for December on January 12, 2023.
