Since the beginning of December…
There was great lamentation in Zurich when the Kosmos cinema and cultural center had to close down due to mismanagement at the beginning of December. Follow-up projects are now emerging – with prominent applicants and entirely in the spirit of the property owner, SBB. Shortly before Christmas, the latter had already clearly declared how things should ideally continue in the best location at the end of the vibrant Europaallee: “The subsequent use should be similar to the Kosmos,” it said at the time.
This intention could soon be fulfilled. As the financial portal “Tippinpoint” knows from well-informed sources, two cultural and gastronomic heavyweights are said to have expressed their interest in the Kosmos premises: Blue Cinemas and Candrian Catering. The Swisscom subsidiary is one of the largest cinema operators in Switzerland, and in Zurich it uses, among other things, the halls in the Abaton, Capitol and Corso cinemas – mostly with blockbusters suitable for the masses.
Candrian Catering is a gastro wholesaler with 45 restaurants, bars and hotels throughout Switzerland. According to the finance portal, the chances of the two top dogs being able to use the cultural temple in the future are not bad. Which, of course, immediately provokes resistance: “If this consortium wins, then it will no longer remind you of the old Kosmos,” fears a person from the former Kosmos environment. “That would be pure commerce.”
Decide already at the end of March?
However: Even in the old cosmos, there were always blockbusters on the program, and there were gastronomic classics such as Wiener Schnitzel in the restaurant.
The hope of those interested in culture in Zurich: According to “Tippinpoint”, the Arthouse Commercio Movie AG, which operates five studio cinemas and the Restaurant Commercio in Zurich, is also said to have expressed interest in the cinemas. So something like the alternative to the two commercial heavyweights. According to SBB, the decision about the future of the cosmos could be made towards the end of March.
