It’s a legend, the Billy frame from Ikea. The furniture from the Swedish furnishing giant accompanies many people throughout their lives. From the children’s room to the student flat share. From your first own apartment to your own children’s room. If it survived all the moves safely.
Exactly this iconic piece of furniture is now being revised by Ikea. After 40 years of production. That takes courage. Because customers love the classic, just as it is. In 2021 alone, 8 million copies were sold worldwide.
paper instead of wood
What changes? Instead of wood, there is now paper veneer. The frame should be more sustainable – and make it easier to move. In concrete terms: fittings and brackets for the shelves should be easier to disassemble and reassemble.
The iconic nails – probably made in Poland by the millions – are replaced with snap fasteners to fasten the back panel. The new Billy will be launched in Asia in 2022. In 2024 it should then be available on the markets worldwide. Also in Switzerland and with new colors. There is no further information yet.
Ikea’s most successful product
The Billy frame is Ikea’s most successful product. The most famous piece of furniture in the world. It has won various design awards. One is sold every five seconds somewhere in the world. And then put it together in the sweat of your brow. (pbe)
