Just before Christmas
Tens of thousands of British postmen are on strike!
Thousands of British postmen have protested in the government district of London in the fight for higher wages and secure jobs. More than 115,000 Royal Mail employees stopped working on Friday, according to the BBC.
Royal Mail workers protest outside Parliament in London.
The dispute between the union of workers in the postal and telecoms sector (CWU) and the employer – like in many other sectors in Britain – has been smoldering for some time.
Workers are demanding wage increases that are commensurate with the rise in consumer prices. They also fear for the security of their jobs: Royal Mail wants to cut 10,000 jobs by next summer, and up to 6,000 layoffs are also to be feared. “Save our Royal Mail” read placards that some strikers brought with them to the protest in front of Parliament.
The British sometimes have to wait longer for Christmas mail and parcels. The Post has already asked the population to post consignments early before the holidays. Before Christmas, the workers want to go on strike for several more days.
