Because of climate change
This ski area doesn’t expect any more snow
The Schwyz community of Sattel and the Sattel-Hochstuckli ski area want to remain competitive even if less snow falls one day due to climate change. They are participating as a test and pilot area in the Alpine-wide EU project “BeyondSnow”.

Sattel-Hochstuckli is preparing for winter without snow.
The so-called Interreg project, in which six countries are involved, was launched on Monday and Tuesday in Bolzano, Italy. It aims to strengthen the resilience of smaller winter sports destinations at medium altitudes that are particularly affected by climate change. They should remain attractive for residents and tourists.
The Swiss Association for Mountain Regions (SAB) is also involved. For the three-year pilot project, she got the municipality of Sattel on board, whose ski area of Sattel-Hochstuckli is around 1,600 meters above sea level.
future direction
They form one of nine different test destinations in the six Alpine countries, as the municipality announced on Tuesday. As part of the project, an instrument is being developed that other affected regions could also use in the future.
As a pilot region, Sattel must initially provide data, for example on geography, climate and economy, said Mayor Pirmin Moser when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. This information is transferred to an adaptation model. From this, in turn, a digital tool will be further developed to help tourism destinations decide on their future orientation and diversification of activities.
Possible changes to the offer
Thanks to the exchange, the municipality of Sattel wants to gain experience and receive advice from the professional support on a possible change in the offer. “We don’t want to wait and be afraid, we want to reposition ourselves,” said Moser.
The EU launched the Interreg program in 1990. Switzerland is participating in it as part of the New Regional Policy (NRP). (pbe/SDA)
