Daniel Vasella claimed to live in Monaco – but the bills convicted him.

Ex-Novartis boss and multi-millionaire Daniel Vasella (69) did not want to pay taxes in the canton of Zug in 2013 – because he allegedly lives in Monaco. In detective work, however, the tax investigators showed him that it was a scam – among other things because of Nespresso capsule orders. Vasella defended herself against this accusation, but was defeated by the Zug Administrative Court.
Vasella thus joins an inglorious list of celebrities who have had to answer in court for a tax affair. These include, for example, Cristiano Ronaldo, Uli Hoeness or actor Wesley Snipes.
“Please leave the train”
The community is anything but good. “I am shocked, extremely disappointed by the behavior of the Vasellas. Very shameful and selfish,” writes reader Philippe Zihlmann, for example. “You can’t move to Zug with this wealth to benefit from tax advantages and then not even pay the minimum taxes. Obviously, the Vasella family regrets every franc. Just for further training to Vasella: The tax payments to the canton also benefit the middle class and the socially disadvantaged. This means, for example, that the infrastructure in Zug is maintained and expanded, which Vasella benefits from when he drives to the airport. But the Vasellas obviously don’t want to ensure that, among other things, small and medium-sized businesses receive a minimum of benefits through tax revenue. Please leave our canton of Zug!»
If you have so much money and then try to cheat the state, you probably don’t have the best character. Thank goodness things like this tend to be uncovered at some point.”Reader Heidi Lucie Friedli
Reader Heidi Lucie Friedli doubles: “Anyone who has so much money and then tries to cheat the state probably doesn’t have the best character. Thank goodness things like this tend to be uncovered at some point.” Beat Graf is also disappointed: «I thought he was an intelligent person. That’s how you can fool yourself. The tax officials in Zug probably had a lot of fun doing their research.»
“You learn to save with the rich”
In addition to the tax amount to be paid in arrears, Vasella also has to shell out 25,000 francs for the “extraordinarily high amount of time and work”. The court states that the disputed tax amount is “extremely” high. So the effort of the Zug tax office was definitely worth it – Daniel Vasella’s fortune is estimated at 375 million francs by the “balance sheet”.
A joke, finds reader Maria Müller. “25,000 francs ‘penalty’ for tax trickery on this scale. Someone else should tell me that the same rights and obligations apply to everyone in Switzerland. »
Hans Hintermann concludes the course. This reader doesn’t seem to be really surprised: “You learn to save with the rich. It’s always been like that.”
