Mega iCloud leak: This is what Blick reported in September 2014.
“Anyone could see my naked body at any time of the day.”Jennifer Lawrence
It was the worst case scenario for the Hollywood star. In 2014, hackers cracked Jennifer Lawrence’s (then 24) iCloud photos – and flooded the internet with them. It was an Eldorado for the cyber crooks. Apparently, the actress took an unusually large number of explicit pictures of herself because her boyfriend was away on business.
Why are we rehashing this old story? Because Apple has strengthened data protection here!
Jennifer Lawrence could have turned on two-factor authentication back then to prevent a leak. But now there is another level of security.
Since Apple released the iOS 16.3 update on Monday, Swiss people can also activate “extended data protection”.
But be careful: According to Apple, you are then completely responsible for not losing access to your data (photos, backup, notes, etc.). In other words: Apple support cannot help you if you should cheat your access data.
If the worst comes to the worst, you need a trustworthy recovery contact or a personal recovery key.
So, having warned you, here are the instructions on how to set up extended privacy.
Open iPhone settings
Go to your account in the settings at the top.
Press iCloud in Settings.
Enable enhanced data protection
You can find the point if you scroll down a bit. Here you will then need to name a recovery contact or generate a recovery key (and keep it safe).
Training courses in the Apple Store
Apart from the new iCloud function, Apple is increasing data protection – or wants to make it better known to the public. Starting January 28th, European Data Protection Day, Apple will be offering free training in its stores. Motto: «Protect your data on the iPhone.» Here you will learn privacy features for email, security checks, location services and passkeys. Interested parties can make an appointment via this link.
A new campaign with “Ted Lasso” star Nick Mohammed is also intended to make the topic known.
