It starts on Sunday in Davos GR. The 51st World Economic Forum (WEF) begins. Actually, it should have taken place in January. The postponement to May is at least a win in terms of weather. The participants can expect sunny days and warm temperatures, with a little rain here and there.
The weather is also benefiting demonstrators planning to protest the WEF. And there are quite a few of them. The WEF committee of the Graubünden government and the Graubünden cantonal police have examined three applications, writes the “Südostschweiz” in the current issue. All protests were approved.
Three times on the town hall square
The first will take place at the start of the WEF next Sunday. Location: Rathausplatz in Davos. Juso Switzerland is behind the “Strike-WEF” collective. A maximum of 500 people are permitted.
According to the Davoser land clerk, the second demonstration should take place on May 23rd. Also on the town hall square, but only around 40 protesters are expected. The Cambodian embassy submitted the request for the demonstration.
The third protest is about the climate. The “Climate Strike Davos” movement is planning a rally on the Rathausplatz for May 26th.
A maximum of 5000 members of the army in action
Demonstrations are expected in the next few days not only in Davos, but traditionally also in other cities in Switzerland. According to “Südostschweiz”, the left-wing group Revolutionary Construction Switzerland is planning a protest in Zurich on May 20th.
Due to a pandemic-related postponement, the WEF will take place from May 22nd to 26th. The federal parliament has set an upper limit of 5,000 members of the army for an army operation from May 20th to 30th. However, only a small part of this will be used in Davos itself.
