The onion principle is suitable for ski clothing. Put on a bottom, middle and top layer.
Here we explain which clothing you should wear for skiing or snowboarding and which materials are suitable.
Onion principle with the right materials
With the onion principle, you put on a bottom, middle and top layer. The lowest consists of ski underwear, which lies directly on the skin. Synthetic materials work best as they absorb almost no moisture. Thermal underwear for skiing usually consists of synthetic fiber material and is elastic.
Cozy fleece jackets or sweaters made of merino wool, which store heat, are particularly suitable for the middle layer. The top layer is responsible for weather protection. It should ward off wind, snow or generally wet conditions. It has to be breathable and waterproof. When choosing a ski jacket, you should pay attention to the other functions of the jacket. Bag departments where you can store your things are useful, for example.
Wear balaclava and helmet
Since many accidents happen while skiing, you have to protect yourself as well as possible. The head is particularly sensitive, so you should always wear a helmet. This can reduce head injuries and the risk of craniocerebral trauma. A helmet also keeps your head warm. On very cold days you can also wear a balaclava under the helmet.
When you put on the helmet, you should make sure that you close it well and that it does not shift while riding. After a fall you have to replace a ski helmet. Otherwise, you should replace it after about eight years, because then the material gives way.

Ski socks and heated soles
To keep your feet warm, you need the right ski socks. They also absorb sweat and ensure that feet and ski boots smell less. Good ski socks can also prevent injuries and incorrect loads.
For “Gföörlis” we recommend special heated socks or warming soles in the ski boots. They increase well-being and protect against hypothermia and injuries. The heated socks are available in a wide variety of designs.
The right gloves
Gloves not only keep our hands warm, they also protect us from injuries caused by sharp-edged skis in the event of a fall. With finger gloves you have more mobility and can grip better. With mittens you have warmer hands.
It is important not to wear gloves that are too small. Because if the gloves are too tight, it affects blood flow and less heat is produced.

Ski goggles or sunglasses?
During winter sports in the mountains, the sun’s rays are particularly strong, which is harmful to the eyes. That’s why you should protect them with ski goggles. But is it enough to just wear sunglasses? When skiing, no. Because the sunglasses do not protect on the side. This is how cold gets to the face, especially the forehead. With sunglass lenses, it is often difficult to see in dark conditions.
Ski goggles are better. It has anti-fog coatings, UV protection and some even have climate control. This gives you a better view in light-shadow situations.
