If the dogs or cats had their way, they would probably curl up in their master’s bed seven days a week. Out of pity, the little companions are sometimes allowed to do the same. But where is the limit? Is it important for the upbringing and behavior of the animal?
Dog school manager Barbara Eggimann (52) is the owner of eleven dogs and has already had some success with the well-behaved four-legged friends. For her, the following applies: “Dogs are only allowed to go to bed if there is a clear hierarchy, they are obedient and it is right for all family members.”
“We like to test the limits”
In a large group of dogs, as is the case with Eggimann at home, you should definitely make sure that the four-legged friends do not quarrel over resources, such as the coveted berths. Here, too, good training is the top priority, because, according to Eggimann, animals like to test the limit of the owner again and again.
If the limits are finally exceeded, it can become unpleasant or even dangerous for humans and animals. The owners sometimes underestimate the dog and are not aware of the responsibility.
Pets in bed are good for health
“Nevertheless, having a pet in bed can have a very calming effect,” says Eggimann. And the 52-year-old goes on to say: “Constant contact with animals also strengthens people’s defenses.” In fact, the dog owner hits the mark with it. A study from the US state of Arizona found that most people sleep better when their pet is lying next to them. The furry sleeping companions can have a stress-reducing and health-promoting effect.
Of the approximately 150 pet owners surveyed in the study, only 20 percent were bothered by their four-legged friends walking around or snoring. “One simply has to reckon with the fact that animals don’t just lie and sit, but like to take advantage of their opportunities,” says Eggimann.
But when can dogs really go into the bedroom without hesitation? “Actually never – unless they are trained assistance dogs and have to be with the patient around the clock.” The trained four-legged friends must always be able to react and help, but not necessarily lie in bed. “For example, we want to train one of my dogs to be a migraine alert dog,” says Eggimann. The dog would then lie in the basket next to the bed and, in the event of a migraine attack, would turn on the light with its paws, wake Eggimann up and bring pills.
hygiene and diseases
In addition to helping paws, four-legged friends can also bring diseases with them. “You absolutely have to follow a hygiene plan including deworming, vaccination and regular checking for ticks.” In addition, you should change the bed linen more often, as the little animals lose a lot of hair. And it is true: People can also infect pets, which is why both parties should not be ailing or susceptible.
Cat bites are not to be underestimated
With cats, however, additional caution is required, because they usually have their own will and are not so easy to train. “If a kitty bites, it can quickly lead to inflammation,” explains the dog school leader.
Cat teeth are very sharp and when bitten they cause small wounds that are not immediately noticeable. Therefore, the bite is often ignored and can later develop into an infection, an abscess or even blood poisoning. This happens because of bacteria that cling to the teeth and in the saliva.
The special colonization of germs in the muzzle of the Büsi comes from the fact that the cats are carnivores. If you bite, these germs become very aggressive and cause unpredictable reactions. Of course, this is not the case with every little “love bite”. However, if the wound is bleeding or particularly deep, you must urgently disinfect it and consult a doctor.
Children and animals in the same bed?
In general, only obedient animals should be allowed to sleep. That’s why Studie and Eggimann agree: Pets are taboo in the cot! According to the dog owner, both children and animals are unpredictable. Both have to learn how to get along with each other, which is why it is better to let a puppy spend the night in a basket in the parents’ bedroom at the beginning.
It is important that even children do not lie in the pet basket, so that they respect the space of the animal. “Child and four-legged friend are not doing each other any favors if they sleep in each other’s bed or basket.”
