Winter in the Swiss mountains is not only ideal for walks and winter sports – art enthusiasts will also get their money’s worth there.
Away from the snow-covered slopes, there is a lot to discover in the mountains. Not only sports and wellness fans, but also art enthusiasts get their money’s worth there: exhibitions in art houses, museums and hotels attract visitors from near and far to the Swiss Alps. But you can not only admire the works of others, but also create your own. Artistic activities such as building ice or snow sculptures are also on offer, with help from ice artists or experienced instructors.
These five artistic excursion tips are ideal in winter in the mountains:
Carving ice sculptures, throughout Switzerland
If you want to create a work of art from a block of ice in a small group, then Outdoor Dreams is the right place for you. The company offers, among other things, team events and outdoor activities that take place at various locations in Switzerland. For example, you can book the carving of ice sculptures all year round in the middle of the city or on a viewing platform in the mountains, as the website says.
The artistic activity lasts around two hours and is guided by ice artists. Five people work on each block of ice. All necessary materials will be provided by the organizers. Prior registration and planning online is necessary.
The group event takes place all year round throughout Switzerland. Costs for groups of 10 to 19 people: CHF 175 per person

Art exhibition at Hotel Castell, Zuoz GR
From the Hotel Castell in Zuoz GR you can not only quickly get to the ski slopes, winter hiking trails or the cross-country ski run in winter, guests are also offered an art exhibition with contemporary works. The collection includes works by renowned artists such as Pipilotti Rist (60), Roman Signer (84) and Carsten Höller (61). Another highlight is the Sky Space Tower Piz-Uter by James Turell (79), which you can visit. In addition, “Art Weekends” take place in the hotel every year and there is a shop where you can buy books, photos, maps and limited art objects, for example.

Another worthwhile excursion for art lovers is a visit to the Kirchner Museum in Davos GR. The next exhibition, which will open on February 12, 2023, is currently being prepared. This is an Expressionism exhibition with works from the Horn Collection, which includes exhibits by artists such as Emil Nolde (1867-1956), Erich Heckel (1883-1970) and Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945).
In the collection of the Kirchner Museum Davos you can also admire all creative periods of the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), whose name the private museum bears. The barrier-free museum is family-friendly and offers audio guides in German, French, Italian and English.

Admission prices: Adults pay 12 francs, children from the age of seven and students pay 5 francs, groups of ten or more pay 10 francs per person.
Building snow sculptures, German-speaking Switzerland
A snow sculpture may not last forever, but the event is remembered for a long time. Appointments can be booked during the winter season via the event organization Impuls-Event, where a work of art can be created from snow in a group of ten or more people anywhere in German-speaking Switzerland. The sculptures can be built both in the mountains and in the city. The right tools, material and competent instructors ensure that the snow figures are a success, even if you have no previous experience with them. About one and a half hours are planned for each event. Registration is required.
The group event takes place from December to March in German-speaking Switzerland. Costs when booking the maximum group size: CHF 80 per person.

Kunsthaus Werner Zurbriggen, Saas-Fee VS
The former family home of the Swiss painter and graphic artist Werner Zurbriggen (1931-1980) is now the Kunsthaus in the winter sports resort of Saas-Fee VS that bears his name. Numerous works by Zurbriggen, who is known in particular for figurative constructivism, are shown there. The artist’s work is also presented in the virtual art space of the Kunstverein Oberwallis.
