In front of the north portal in Göschenen in the canton of Uri, traffic was temporarily backed up by up to six kilometers, which meant a waiting time of up to an hour, as the TCS announced on Twitter. In front of the south portal in Airolo, Ticino, the length of the traffic jam was four kilometers.
The passenger car affected by the smoke drove into a breakdown niche in the tunnel, as a spokesman for the Uri cantonal police said at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. The fire department was there and the car was towed away. Nobody got hurt. The tunnel was closed from 1:40 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
The cause of the smoke development was unclear and is being clarified. The cantonal police in Uri suspected a cable fire due to a technical defect.
