How sustainable is online shopping?

Clothing, laptops, toys – many products come to us from Asia. Often with container ships via large European ports such as Rotterdam or Amsterdam.

The share of the journey of a single product in the total CO2-Output from the supply chain is very small, says Maike Scherrer, Professor of Sustainable Supply Chain Management and Mobility at the ZHAW. “The so-called ‘last mile’, i.e. the route from a distribution center to the consumer, causes the most emissions.”
