A pounding skull, dizziness and nausea? One thing is clear: You looked too deep into the glass.
It is of course illusory to think that a night of drinking leaves no traces at all. But with a few small tips, at least the worst evil can be alleviated: the hangover. Such tricks can be found in abundance on advice sites on the Internet. But which of them are good and which belong to the realm of myths and legends?
1. A counter beer in the morning drives away the hangover
Let’s start with one of the most common hangover tips: A counter beer in the morning will drive away the hangover. Younger people in particular swear by it. Must be placebo. That’s a myth. The hangover is a sign of poisoning, so taking more of the poison doesn’t help.
2. Consume three tablespoons of olive oil before going out
This is also a popular piece of advice before hitting the nightlife. And it’s true. Pure olive oil may not taste particularly good, but it actually helps the hangover move more in the realm of a house cat and not a full-grown tiger.
This is because the fat limits the body’s ability to absorb alcohol into the blood. Incidentally, a similar effect is achieved if you eat greasy food.
3. Gin, beer, wine – any mess makes hangovers worse
This widespread assumption is wrong. Or at least it hasn’t been scientifically proven yet. The hangover is mostly due to the amount, not the drink.
4. Exercising gets rid of hangovers
Unfortunately that’s not true either. The alcohol is broken down in the liver and that just takes time. Jogging or cycling won’t help either. But what is definitely good is the fresh air. So get out of bed and into nature.
5. Enough food beforehand
“Having good soil” is what people call a full stomach before drinking. The idea behind it: If you have eaten a lot, you can drink more and get drunk less quickly. And that’s even true. The more we have eaten, the longer it takes for the alcohol to take effect. Incidentally, high-fat and high-carbohydrate foods such as pizza or pasta are best suited to the «bödele».
6. Vitamins help
This is logically true – vitamins always help. Alcohol destroys important ones, which causes the body to become exhausted. Vitamin supplements can support the liver. It is best to take these before you start drinking. If you spontaneously go into the alley, that’s a rather worthless tip. Fortunately, the Street Parade can be planned quite well.
Vitamins B and C help detoxify the liver. If you don’t want to take supplements, you can also take the vitamins naturally. Vitamin B, for example, is mainly found in animal products such as meat, milk or cheese. Vitamin C, on the other hand, is mainly found in fruit and vegetables.
7. Showering washes away the hangover
That’s not true. Alcohol is broken down in the liver and not even the longest and hottest shower can help. Incidentally, you can’t sweat alcohol out in the sauna for the same reason. Just five percent of the alcohol is sweated out through the skin, the rest is broken down quite normally.
8. Drink water
The best tip ever and of course absolutely true. Drinking enough water makes sense at any time of the celebration, whether it’s before, after, or while you’re drinking. Alcohol draws water out of the body. A glass of water after every drink would be best. This prevents the risk of the body becoming dehydrated.
9. Hangover! What now?
But even those who follow all these tips and tricks will feel a night of drinking the next morning. And even if the hangover is already there, there are tricks on how you can at least fight it a little. Here, too, one thing applies above all: drink a lot of water!
