Röstidig while eating
That’s what the Swiss feast on on New Year’s Eve
Not only at Christmas, but also on New Year’s Eve people like to feast. What is on the table differs depending on the language region. Salmon and other fish are popular in Romandy. In German-speaking Switzerland it’s more ham.

Not only at Christmas, but also on New Year’s Eve people like to feast.
It is not for nothing that the gap between German and French-speaking Switzerland has a name that has something to do with food. A Röstigraben can also be seen in the favorite dishes on New Year’s Eve.
German-speaking Swiss want pork
30 percent of French people eat fish on New Year’s Eve. Another third eats turkey, goose or duck. Neither is popular with the German-speaking Swiss: only 10 percent eat fish. Turkey, goose or duck only 5 percent. East of the Röstigraben you tend to eat ham.
Fondue chinoise on top
However, neither fish nor ham can compete with the most popular New Year’s Eve menu in Switzerland: Fondue Chinoise or Fondue Bourguignonne. This is what almost half of the Swiss population eats at the turn of the year. In second place follows filet in dough, which is served by every fifth person.
The Swiss treat themselves to something at the end of the year
Savings are definitely not made at New Year’s Eve: Customers often use Edellinien products, said the spokesman for Aldi Suisse and Lidl Switzerland. Oysters or scallops sell well at Manor. However, experiments are rare: It is celebrated very traditionally, said Denner spokeswoman Paloma Martino. Customers deviated little from their usual habits.
Alcohol consumption is always heavy
This also applies to toasting: Champagne and Prosecco are very popular. Wine, beer and spirits are also often sold over the counter. A new trend is high-quality gins, says Denner spokeswoman Martino.
Disposable champagne glasses with colour-changing LEDs are doing well at Migros.
Prepare hangover breakfast
On January 1st, a rude awakening follows in some places: Migros says that coffee for a hangover is popular. Likewise green tea and nettle tea for detoxification in January. (sda)
