Long walks can become boring for children. These tips will help to ensure that the little ones still have fun out and about in winter.
While adults enjoy the beautiful surroundings and go for a walk lost in thought, children often get bored on longer trips if they don’t have playmates with them. You can play various games with the little ones so that they can have fun in the fresh air despite the cold. These pass the time and during a snowball fight or, for example, when skating, you get nice and warm because you are physically strenuous.
The cold season also has some adventures to offer away from the ski slopes. The following games and winter activities are suitable for families and are easy to implement or can be inspiration for a trip:
tobogganing
A highlight on snowy winter days is tobogganing. It is of course most fun when the children can whiz down a hill on their sled. If there is no suitable slope on the selected route of the excursion, it is still fun for the little ones if the sled is taken along and they are sometimes pulled through the snowy landscape by their parents. And maybe you will unexpectedly find a small hill on the way that you can drive down?

make snow angels
Winter clothing for children should always be warm, and ideally also water-repellent for this activity: make snow angels and enjoy the resulting works of art in the snow together. Simply lie on your back and stretch your arms and legs out to the side of your body. Now you move both your arms and your legs along the side of the ground, shifting the snow so that the outline of an angel appears in it. This results in beautiful photo motifs and is always funny.
snowball fight
Snowball fights are not yet for very small children, but as soon as they can form and throw snowballs themselves, you can enjoy this winter activity with them. It is important that only clean snow without ice, sticks or stones is used so that nobody is injured. You should decide together beforehand whether you take turns throwing yourself off, adding special rules for younger participants, or whether the snowball fight should be carried out in the classic way (that is, chaotically).
build snowmen
Whether in the city, in the garden or in the mountains – when it has snowed, many children can hardly wait to build a snowman. The youngsters are also happy on excursions when figures are built out of snow together. It doesn’t always have to be a snowman, you can also make a snow woman, a snow bunny or a polar bear out of snow and decorate them with stones or sticks you’ve collected along the way.
Picnic in the snow
Instead of stopping at a restaurant or café, you can also organize a small picnic in the snow. You should bring warm drinks and, for example, a hot soup or stew in thermal containers. This is a wonderful way to warm up and strengthen yourself while enjoying the fresh air.
Winter activities with toddlers – These are our favorites
Ice scating
With a little practice, ice skating can almost make you feel like you can fly. So it’s no wonder that children in particular enjoy it so much. In the beginning, they still drive with the hands of adults or hold on to special figures that give them support while driving. Most ice rinks rent skates, but you can also bring your own. Children should definitely wear a helmet when playing this sport.
Look for animal tracks in the snow
This activity requires a bit of patience and good eyesight, as you look for animal tracks in the snow together. While dogs, rabbits or deer leave clear footprints in the snow, mice or small bird species are lighter and have smaller feet, making their footprints harder to detect in the snow. Whoever finds the most animal tracks on a walk or winter hike wins.
