With his band Take That, British singer Gary Barlow (51) played a major role in shaping the music of the 1990s. In recent years, however, Barlow has become a little quieter, until he suddenly presented his own wine line in October 2021.
According to Barlow, it is no coincidence that the wines come from Spain: The country was the first he traveled to as a child, says the Brit. Spain also has a special status for his time with Take That because the music group gave their first concert abroad in that country.
Gary Barlow relies on organic wines
After other famous personalities such as Jon Bon Jovi (60) or Kylie Minogue (54) entered the wine business, Barlow now also dared to take this step. His wines are made exclusively from organically grown grapes and come from the Spanish wine-growing region of Castilla.
Barlow’s white wine consists of half each of the grape varieties Viura and Verdejo and is matured in steel tanks. Aromas of lemon, green apple and fresh fennel develop in the glass, and the wine is carried by a pleasant acidity. Instead of a cork, the bottles have a screw cap.
For his red wine, Barlow opted for a blend of the Syrah and Tempranillo grape varieties from 30 to 40 year old vines. This wine is also not matured in wooden barrels and focuses on its fruity profile. Recently there is also a rosé made from Tempranillo, which shows a perceptible residual sweetness.
The success speaks for itself
Barlow’s wines sold in English supermarkets for the equivalent of ten francs a bottle and were in great demand right from the start. About a year after the launch, it is evident that the singer had a good instinct with his idea: over 500,000 bottles sold and continued uninterrupted demand.
In the near future, Barlow’s line of wines is set to expand further. For example, a red wine aged in an oak barrel or a sparkling wine would be conceivable. However, Swiss fans of the singer will have to be patient, as Barlow’s wines are currently only available in Great Britain and Ireland.
