During a journey of around two hours, the Vigezzina-Centovalli train takes you through Ticino and northern Italy.
We Swiss are proud of our country’s train infrastructure – and rightly so. Public transport is not only practical, but often also beautifully situated, so that Switzerland shows its best side on a train journey. BLICK therefore presents seven of the most beautiful train routes below.
Furka steam railway
With the Furka steam train you can enjoy a truly romantic ride. The authentically restored steam locomotives run along the Rhone and Mutt glaciers and over the Furka Pass. The route takes around two hours, starts in Brig VS and ends in Realp UR or vice versa. The return journey can be made either via Göschenen UR or Chur GR.
The route in the south passes through Ticino and northern Italy during the approximately two-hour journey. On the 52-kilometer route you can admire the fantastic panorama between Centovalli TI and Vigezzo (I) and cross 83 bridges and viaducts. If you want to take a closer look at certain regions, you can also take breaks along the way. So you can take a little more time for the Ticino cable cars Intragna-Pila-Costa, Verdasio-Rasa, Monte Comino, in Intragna TI the church tower and the regional museum or in Domodossola (I) the traditional Saturday market.
The classic route of the Bernina Express runs from St. Moritz GR to Tirano (I). However, the experience can be supplemented with the Rhaetian Railway from Chur GR to St. Moritz and the Bernina Express from Tirano to Lugano TI. On the same trip you can cross the Albula Line, a Unesco World Heritage Site, or look out the window at the beautiful Valtellina in Italy in the south. During the impressive and relaxing train journey, you can marvel at the glaciers of the Bernina Group, the Bernina Pass, Lago Bianco and Poschiavo GR.
Jura base line
The Jura foot line is a railway line that runs from Olten SO via Solothurn, Grenchen SO, Biel BE, Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains VD and Morges VD to Lausanne VD. The train passes lakes, vineyards and picturesque villages, which provides a fantastic view. The route on Lake Neuchâtel is very winding, which is why it is used with tilting trains.
Around Lake Thun
This route is suitable for anyone who likes to cycle past bodies of water. In a good half hour you can get from one end of Lake Thun to the other by train. During the trip along the water you have a direct view of the lake and the mountains behind it most of the time. To travel the route without changing trains, the Intercity train 61 is recommended.
Through the original cantons
From Erstfeld UR to Zurich or vice versa you drive through the heart of Switzerland. On the way through the original cantons, you can marvel not only at places steeped in history, such as the Rütli, but also at the enchanting landscape. The windows offer a fantastic view of well-known Swiss mountains and lush greenery. During the train journey you also pass four lakes. The entire journey takes around one and a half hours and can be taken on the Interregio train 46 without having to change trains.
The entire route of the Glacier Express from St. Moritz GR to Zermatt VS or vice versa takes about eight hours. While all sections promise unique views, you can experience the great diversity of Switzerland along the entire route. On the journey from Eastern Switzerland via Central Switzerland to Western Switzerland, you pass through several language areas, Swiss cultural heritage and different types of vegetation. In total, you drive through 91 tunnels and cross 291 bridges, and you also climb up from deep valleys to the 2,033 meter high Oberalp Pass.
