hype or help?

Anyone who surfs the Internet and social media channels knows them only too well: the many ads for products that are advertised so effectively and positively that you are suspicious at first. Nevertheless, from time to time one is tempted to order such a product. That’s exactly how I felt with this acupressure mat, also known as a spiked, fakir or shakti mat, which promises relaxation and well-being and is even said to improve headaches or sleep disorders. I wanted to try that!

I chose the Anodyne acupressure set, which consists of a mat with 6210 spikes and a neck pillow with 1593 spikes. So a total of 7,803 plastic thorns, which from now on are supposed to hit my body at regular intervals – to relax me and my muscles, of course. Just one day later, the mat and pillow, including a storage bag, arrive at my place. Now I can’t back down, the first session is scheduled.

What is acupressure?

As the name suggests, Chinese healing is closely related to acupuncture. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), twelve energy channels (meridians) run through the human body, on which numerous trigger points are located. During the treatment, blockages are to be released by specifically working on the corresponding points so that the flow of energy can circulate undisturbed again. However, acupressure does not use needles, only pressure is applied to these points. For example with hands, elbows or even objects like a spiked mat. Although acupressure is not considered to be as effective as acupuncture, it is ideally suited for safe use at home.

How is the acupressure mat used?

The operation, if you can even call it that, is very simple: lay the mat and pillow together on the floor, sit bare-backed in front of the mat and slowly lie down. My first thought: Which sadist came up with this torture device? It is recommended to start with short sessions and increase the time on the mat with each use. The first 30 seconds are uncomfortable, the plastic needles pricking my back and neck and my nerves protest.

Then it slowly gets better, after about a minute the pain turns into a pressure that can still be felt, but with deep breaths it is no longer a real pain. And at some point my back will be pleasantly warm and the pain will go away. After five minutes, I roll off the mat and examine my back. Red and well supplied with blood, but no visible punctures. By the way: The acupressure mat can be used all over the body. You can even stand on it and use it to work on the trigger points on your feet.

Does the acupressure mat help?

After two weeks, during which I lay down on the mat for at least ten to twenty minutes every other day, I draw a positive conclusion. Due to my office job and a posture that is often not ideal, I have tension and complaints in the neck and shoulder area. They have actually improved noticeably. Especially after sports activities or a whole day on my feet, the Shakti mat was a very welcome opportunity to relax my muscles. Users also report that they sleep better and are less nervous or restless with regular use.

The warming effect that sets in after a few minutes on the mat is definitely pleasant and the simultaneous conscious breathing puts you in a meditative state. As a result, nervousness disappears and you feel more sleepy. If you use the mat right before going to bed, it helps against these complaints.
