A good 20 years ago, hardly anyone wore a helmet on the slopes. Unimaginable today. Helmets are now as much a part of ski and snowboard equipment as gloves. Unfortunately, this is different for other winter sports.
When tobogganing, only about every second person wears a helmet. And that despite the fact that 6,300 people are injured in Switzerland every year and require medical treatment. According to the Swiss Advice Center for Accident Prevention (BFU), most injuries when sledging are caused by a self-inflicted fall, but also by collisions with people, trees or vehicles.
The consequences of an accident can be sprains, bruises or concussions. On average, one sledding accident ends in death every winter season.
Clever minds protect themselves – even when tobogganing
Tobogganing is and remains a popular family leisure activity. While wearing a helmet is a matter of course when skiing, more than half of those tobogganing are still out and about without head protection. With the message “Bright minds protect themselves – even when tobogganing”, the health and pension insurer Concordia, together with the BFU, the advice center for accident prevention, has been campaigning for more safety when tobogganing for over six years. And now: on the slopes, get set, go!

Many of these accidents could be prevented if the riders were properly prepared for the toboggan run. This includes wearing the right clothing and adhering to the most important rules of conduct.
As with skiing or snowboarding, you should also have one for sledding water-repellent snow pantsone winter jacket and gloves wear. are essential sturdy winter shoes with a good profile, which provide the necessary grip when braking. One is important helmet, which can prevent severe skull and brain injuries. He has to come too ski goggles sit well, there should be a finger’s width between the chin and the band and it should neither pinch nor wobble. Wooden sled, toboggan or bob? According to the BFU, only the toboggan can be controlled correctly on firm and icy surfaces. A sled is rigid and difficult to steer with its runners. A bob works well in soft and wet snow, but it is difficult to brake and steer, and it travels very quickly on hard and icy surfaces.
The basic position on the Sleds is upright, the feet belong on the skids. Shift your weight inwards when steering, press your feet into the snow next to the inner skid. At the Tobogganing the basic position looks a little different, either lying on your back or sitting upright, pressing your legs against the runners from the outside. When steering, shift your weight inwards, push the outer skid inwards with your legs and relieve the inner skid by pulling on the steering belt.
When braking, there is only the following technique: press both feet flat into the snow right next to the runners, lift the device at the front for reinforcement, do not straighten your legs.
The right equipment is ready, the ideal sled is at hand, the technology is well-established – all that’s missing is the right route. Specially marked toboggan runs and runs are ideal. Unobstructed slopes with a run-out where there is no danger of colliding with vehicles or other fixed objects are also suitable.
On the slopes, ready, go? Nearly. Now only the ten golden sledding rules are missing:
- Be considerate of others
- Adapt speed and driving style to ability
- Respect the lane of the one in front
- Overtake by far
- Look up before driving in and out
- Stop at the edge
- Climb up and down the edge
- Observe signs and markings
- help
- In the event of an accident: provide personal details
