Who tends to snore – and what helps against it

Why do we snore?

When we sleep, our muscles relax. The palate, uvula and tongue become slack, narrowing our airways. If the air flows through such a bottleneck, the surrounding tissue vibrates and the typical snoring noise occurs. The sounds get even louder if you breathe through your open mouth instead of your nose. Snoring can also be triggered by an anatomically narrow nose, an enlarged uvula, a large tongue or allergies that lead to a blocked nose. Enlarged tonsils are often the reason, especially in children.
