You have to know that – otherwise it will get really expensive!

From February 1, 2023, the new motorway vignette will be mandatory. It still costs 40 francs.

The good news first: the motorway vignette will still cost 40 francs in 2023. The bad news: Driving without a valid vignette is expensive. Vignette sinners pay a fine of 200 francs.

1. How to remove the old vignette?

But not only those who drive without a motorway vignette are punished. If you have a vignette but attach it to the vehicle incorrectly, you will be fined the same amount. Blick shows you how to effortlessly create space for the new sticker.

2. Where does the vignette have to be affixed?

In order to affix the vignette correctly, the following points must be taken into account: In passenger vehicles, the vignette must be affixed to the inside of the windscreen, on the left-hand edge of the windscreen or behind the rear-view mirror. The vignette must stick directly to the window. Adhesive strips, foils and the like are not permitted. Expired vignettes should be removed so that visibility is not impaired by the vignette.

3. Can you transfer car vignettes?

Detaching and transferring a vignette to another vehicle is not permitted. Even when the windshield is replaced, the vignette must not simply be detached from the old pane, but must be replaced with a new vignette.

4. Where do you stick the vignette on trailers?

In the case of vehicles without a windscreen, such as trailers or motorcycles, the vignette must be affixed to a place that cannot be replaced and is easily accessible.

5. How long is a vignette valid?

The vignette is valid for 14 months, namely from December 1st of the previous year to January 31st of the following year.

6. Where can I buy car vignettes?

It can be obtained from post offices, petrol stations, garages and the cantonal road traffic offices. It is also available at all manned customs offices.

7. For which roads do you actually need a vignette?

Not all roads in Switzerland require a vignette. Even not every motorway has a vignette. On this page you will find motorways and highways that are subject to tolls.

8. Can the vignette be transferred to someone?

A motorway vignette cannot be transferred to other vehicles. If a driver replaces a damaged windscreen, the new vignette will be paid for by his insurance company if he can prove that the window with the vignette was replaced.

9. Do foreign cars that only drive through Switzerland also need a motorway vignette?

Anyone driving a car, motorcycle or trailer on the motorway in Switzerland must have a vignette, which is valid all year round.

10. Which fines are threatened with a forged vignette?

Forging or using counterfeit vignettes will result in a report to the federal prosecutor. There is also a fine if the vignette is used several times, for example on different vehicles. Vignette offenders pay a fine of 200 francs.
