Especially in winter, the body does not get enough vitamin D.
Vitamin D is extremely important for us humans. Most illnesses, from the common cold to osteoporosis, heart disease to cancer, are associated with a lack of the sunshine vitamin.
Vitamin D plays an important role in bone structure and tooth development. It improves calcium absorption from the intestine, increases bone mineralization and is essential for bone metabolism.
Why is vitamin D so important?
We need to be awakened from hibernation! This thesis does not come from a doctor, but from an evolutionary biologist – from Jeff T. Bowles. Sometimes you just have to go a little further in order to classify certain observations correctly. Like the fact that almost every disease in the world has been linked to a vitamin D deficiency in at least one serious study. Or that around 80 percent of all patients have low vitamin D levels.
So let’s get out there: around 4.5 billion years ago, the earth collided with the planet Theia. As a result, not only the moon came into being, but also the seasons, because the angle of rotation to the sun shifted. This made it clear: all living things that wanted to survive on this earth had to develop the ability to survive darkness, cold and drought. This brings us to the vitamin – or rather the signal hormone D.
Does vitamin D really help against corona?
Do micronutrients, especially vitamin D, help against corona? The Society for Nutrition says yes, the Corona Task Force thinks that’s nonsense. Who has the better arguments? Economic expert Werner Vontobel makes an interpretation.

waste or lean times
This hormone is formed in all living beings, from unicellular organisms to humans, by the UVB rays of the sun. If there is enough of it, the creature knows that it can use energy wastefully. Clear the way for growth, reproduction, gathering food, healing wounds, etc.
A falling vitamin D level, on the other hand, tells the organism that it has to prepare for lean times and use its energy sparingly or even go into hibernation.
How mammals prepare for hibernation has been well researched: their appetite increases, their thirst for action decreases, weight is put on, the blood sugar level rises so that the blood stays fluid even at low temperatures. Necessary repairs are also postponed to a later date. Survival is more important.
gluttony and addiction to sweets
Back to the modern age: With the beginning of the industrial age, many people moved from the countryside to the cities and under a sooty sky. It wasn’t long before the bone disease rickets became a plague. It was only much later that it was discovered that UVB rays and vitamin D play an important role in the storage of calcium in the bones. Today rickets is no longer an issue. But the “metabolic syndrome” plagues us all the more intensely – obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks. This clinical picture is suspiciously similar to the state in which mammals go when preparing for hibernation: lust for food, addiction to sweets, obesity. And it is probably no coincidence that almost all symptoms of metabolic syndrome are usually associated with low vitamin D levels.
These observations and those of reading thousands of vitamin D studies inspired Bowles to make a bold thesis: We are not sick, we are just in an artificial hibernation – from which we have to wake ourselves up with high doses of vitamin D.
thought, done. Bowles started a self-experiment: Daily doses of initially 4000 and later 40,000 to 100,000 international units (i. U.) of vitamin D3 (plus 4 to 10 milligrams of vitamin K2) were supposed to get his body to put the decades on hold Finally catching up on repair work.
And this is how it happened: the rheumatic complaints disappeared after just a few weeks with 4000 i. & daily. After another six months on the megadoses, asthma, a stubborn toenail fungus, loose ankles, a cyst on the face, a bone spur on the elbow, a ganglion in the wrist and arthritis on the back were gone. Today, colds only last a day at most, and the weight also went down from 85 to 75 kilos.
Of course, isolated cases prove nothing. But Jeff Bowles is not alone. Many doctors and professors also recommend high-dose vitamin D. But nobody has told the story of this super hormone as beautifully as he has.
Watch the food
Since we absorb 90 percent of vitamin D from the sun, many suffer from a vitamin D deficiency. The first symptoms are usually bad mood, nervousness, headaches or insomnia. Anyone who suffers from vitamin D deficiency usually also has several white spots on the inside of the fingernail.
There are some foods that contain the sun vitamin: milk, eggs and mushrooms, for example. But to get the daily dose of vitamin D, we would need to eat at least eight eggs. In fatty fish such as herring or salmon, the dose is high enough.
What can you do about vitamin D deficiency?
We know vitamin D is important. This is formed when the sun shines on the skin. But from October to March the sun is too weak in our latitudes. Many illnesses, from the common cold to cancer, are associated with a lack of vitamin D. Even in summer, around half of the population is undersupplied with vitamin D – even if 30 nanograms per milliliter of blood is considered sufficient.

vitamin supplements
Vitamin D deficiency should not be taken lightly. Those who suffer from it can take preparations in the form of capsules, tablets or drops. However, you should do a blood test in advance to determine the correct dosage.
