During the checks on travelers at Zurich Airport last year, 700 kilograms of khat and small amounts of other illegal narcotics were also seized, as the Zurich cantonal police announced on Thursday. Those arrested were ten women and 31 men between the ages of 20 and 79.
For comparison: in 2021, a total of 85 kilograms of cocaine, 15 kilograms of heroin and 134 kilograms of khat were seized. 35 people were arrested at the time.
Those arrested last year came from Brazil, Great Britain, Holland, Denmark, Colombia, Israel, Ireland, Nicaragua, Norway, Paraguay, Germany, Panama, Senegal, Trinidad, Tobago and Uruguay.
The drugs were imported from Johannesburg (South Africa), Entebbe (Uganda), San José (Costa Rica), Doha (Qatar), Puerto Plata and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Tel Aviv (Israel), Iguazu and Sao Paulo (Brazil) , Nairobi (Kenya), Dubai (UAE). The narcotics from Barcelona and Madrid came from Spain, it was said.
