In the canton of Aargau, the possibility of citizens being able to keep their previous municipal citizenship after a municipality merger is approaching – as an addition to the newly acquired municipal citizenship. The cantonal government sends a corresponding amendment to the municipal law to the hearing.

According to a statement from the State Chancellery on Friday, the draft provides that citizens who want this can submit an application to the responsible regional civil registry office. In this way, they can have their previous place of origin added to their new place of origin in brackets on official documents, such as their passport.
