She just wanted to go to the bathroom in the woods. But a woman from the canton of Bern was sentenced for this. It almost caused a forest fire.
Last year in March, the woman was climbing in the Burgfluh quarry near Wimmis BE when she had to go to the toilet. So she went into the forest. Because she “didn’t want to leave behind any poorly degradable waste,” she “burned the Nastüechli,” she says about “20 minutes”.
But surrounding leaves caught fire. The flames also attacked three trees. According to the public prosecutor’s office, 50 square meters were affected in the end. When the woman from Bern realized what she had done, she tried to put out the flames. She called the other climbers for help and informed the fire brigade.
There was no fire ban in the forest
However, the emergency services only arrived after 40 minutes, according to the woman. During that time, she and the climbers would have kept the fire at bay. Among other things, with the drinking water that the climbers had with them. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire, but two trees had to be felled.
At the time there was no fire ban in the forest. Nevertheless, the lady was sentenced to a conditional fine by penal order for negligently causing a conflagration. There is also a fine of 780 francs and fees of 500 francs. The fire brigade operation incurred costs totaling 7,400 francs. (twa)
