On July 26, 2022, human bones and various pieces of equipment were discovered on the Stockji glacier in Zermatt. DNA analysis was used to identify an alpinist who had been missing since 1990.
In August 1990, a then 27-year-old German alpinist planned to run from Chamonix to Domodossola via the Valais Alps. However, he never arrived at his destination and has since been considered missing. The search at that time was unsuccessful.
On July 26, 2022, mountaineers discovered humans on the Stockji Glacier
Remains and several pieces of equipment. By means of a DNA comparison, it could be proven that the bones found since
August 1990 missing alpinists.
The retreat of the glaciers brings to light an increasing number of missing alpinists who were reported missing several decades ago.
