Holiday return traffic is increasing
Eight kilometers of traffic jams before the Gotthard
In the canton of Ticino, holiday return traffic has led to a long traffic jam in front of the southern portal of the Gotthard road tunnel. This grew to eight kilometers between Faido and Airolo in the early Monday afternoon.

Drivers had to be patient. The loss of time was around one hour and 15 minutes, as the Touring Club Switzerland announced on Twitter.
Winter and ski holidaymakers also encountered traffic obstructions on the roads from the Valais, from the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden. In addition, return travelers had to be patient at the car loading stations. The waiting time was two and a half hours on the Furka in Oberwald VS, half an hour each on the Lötschberg in Goppenstein VS and on the Vereina in Sagliains GR.
The Federal Roads Office expected that the high level of return traffic would continue until Sunday. In most cantons, the Christmas holidays will last until next weekend. (SDA)
