She was the secret star, now she’s out: climate icon Greta Thunberg (19) is not coming to the WEF. This will take place from May 22nd to 26th for the first time in two years – and for the first time in May. For the global government and business elite, this means that the thick coats and heavy boots can stay at home this time.
The list of participants has not yet been officially revealed, but it looks a bit meager compared to previous years. A large US delegation with senators and governors is coming, but neither Joe Biden (79) nor his deputy Kamala Harris (57). Trade Minister Gina Raimondo (50) and Climate Special Representative John Kerry (78) are said to be from the cabinet. The Russian delegation has been discharged due to the war in Ukraine. Several Members of Parliament from Ukraine have agreed, including the Klitschko brothers Wladimir (46) and Vitali (Mayor of Kyiv, 50). President Volodimir Selenski (44) takes part virtually.
Vanessa Nakate comes to the climate protest
The climate strike wants to make noise for this. A demo is planned on the Postplatz on the final day. “We want to draw attention to the fact that the WEF participants are not environmentally friendly and do not have the best for everyone in mind,” says co-organizer Niklas Todt (17).
The organizers are focusing on activists from regions of the world already massively affected by climate change, the so-called “Mapa” activists (Most Affected People and Areas). Its best-known representative Vanessa Nakate (25) from Uganda is coming to Davos in person together with another activist. Due to the current situation, the organizers have also asked Russian and Ukrainian activists.
