“The candidate likes to be photographed, has many – too many – mandates in various clubs and organizations and is omnipresent on social media.” This is in a letter to the editor by Marcel Toeltl (61) on the rheintal24.ch platform. The Nazi sympathizer was expelled from the SVP Rheintal three years ago – because of racist statements.
His criticism of Majlinda Sulejmani (33) is addressed. She is a nurse at the hospital in Wil, vice-president of Mitte-Frauen in the canton of St. Gallen, local president of Mitte in St. Margrethen and a member of many different associations in the Rhine Valley.
A week ago she announced her candidacy for the vacant municipal council seat in St. Margrethen and is thus running against the SVP. The beginning of a lot of criticism that hit her.
«Try to unsettle and manipulate me»
Not only did she face headwinds, but also a lot of “well-intentioned” advice that landed in her e-mail inbox. “You haven’t thought about it enough. Do you have to fly on your face more times?” writes a worried senior (80) who claims to have “immense experience”. “I’ve explained it to you umpteen times. But you just don’t want to hear it.” She is too inexperienced, has little time because she is a mother, has too little time because she is involved in the community, so the tenor.
Sulejmani can confidently do without unsolicited advice from older gentlemen and criticism from people who have disappeared politically. Compared to Blick, however, she is diplomatic: “It’s not a smear campaign, but rather various attempts to unsettle and manipulate me.”
St. Margrethen has a special and very lovable constellation. By that she means the comparatively high proportion of foreigners, paired with the long-established people who still cherish and maintain the old Swiss customs. The single mother is therefore even more determined: “I am convinced that I am the perfect bridge builder between the tried and tested and the new.”
