There was one death at Basel Zoo on Tuesday. A female orangutan has died after giving birth.

A female orangutan died unexpectedly at Basel Zoo on Tuesday, four days after giving birth to her young. Because the newborn would hardly have survived, it was euthanized in consultation with specialists.

The death of the 22-year-old female named Revital came unexpectedly, said Zolli on Facebook and Instagram. Animal keepers would have found the animal lifeless in the enclosure. Revital made a tired, but not ill impression after the birth, they say. She was also a caring mother.
