Basel Asylum for Art from the Kiev Picture Gallery

The Kunstmuseum Basel is showing 49 paintings from the Kiev picture gallery, which have found temporary protection here from the destruction caused by the war. The guest curator from Kyiv also sees the exhibition as an act against the suppression of Ukrainian culture.

Pictures by the Ukrainian artists Oleksandr Shevchenko and Oleksandr Osmyorkin found protection from the war in the Kunstmuseum Basel.

With the exhibition “Born in the Ukraine” the term “escape art” takes on a new meaning. In March 2022, representatives of the Kiev Picture Gallery approached the Kunstmuseum Basel with a request to grant works from the national Ukrainian art museum asylum because there were not enough shelters on site.

Guest curator Oksana Pidsukha was able to prove that this was not simply an empty request at the media presentation of the exhibition on Tuesday: she showed a picture of the hundred-year-old picture gallery, which was badly damaged in a bomb attack.
