Four police officers and two judicial officers were also examined on suspicion of smoke inhalation. However, they remained unharmed, as the Zurich cantonal police announced on Monday.
The fire happened around 6 p.m. on Sunday. The detainee, a 43-year-old Cambodian, had locked himself in his cell. The police officers had to break down the door to save him. He suffered burns of undetermined degrees.
The prison staff had previously alerted the police and asked for assistance. The fire caused property damage of several tens of thousands of francs. All other occupants were able to be evacuated in time by the officials.
