The professors were released in mid-December because of public allegations of plagiarism and criticism of the management of a research institute. At that time it was said that the provisional exemption was valid during the ongoing investigation until definitive measures were ordered. Kölliker did not comment on the ongoing investigation in the interview published on Friday.
However, accusations that nothing had been done at the HSG after past scandals annoyed Kölliker. “We tightened regulations, improved the control system and compliance. But we also had to learn that misconduct can still occur. Things are happening that we thought were no longer possible.” His insight: “We will never be able to guarantee that someone will not comply with specifications or abuse them.”
In the future, the HSG intends to increasingly apply for funds from funding pots. “We are in the middle of developing a new third-party funding strategy,” says Kölliker. “If we open up more sources of financing, this will also take the pressure off the institutes to generate even more third-party funds in the economy.”
