Antonio Guidali (59) likes to lead people through his community. There is the old town. The magnificent dome of the Sanctuary of Santa Croce. The piazza with the street cafes. The Lido on Lake Lugano, which is now open again. The oldest functioning baptismal font in Switzerland is also famous. Since last Thursday, Riva San Vitale TI is one superlative richer. However, the mayor is anything but proud of this.
The annual statistics of the Ticino canton police were presented on May 5th. She revealed: In 2021, no place in Ticino had more crimes on record than Riva San Vitale in relation to the population. In purely mathematical terms, the crime rate had risen by 1,313 percent over the previous year. “When I read about it in Ticinonews, I was blown away,” says Antonio Guidali.
There was only one topic of conversation in the piazza
791 crimes in Riva San Vitale? The community has not heard of a single crime, Antonio Guidali assures Blick. “According to these statistics, a good third of us should have committed a crime,” the entrepreneur continues. ‘What an absurd thought. We’re not the Bronx of Ticino!”
Its citizens were also shocked. “I got calls. People spoke to me on the street. In the village pub, after Sunday mass, everything revolved around just one topic, »said the CVP politician. Antonio Guidali finally asks the police. “The officials didn’t want to tell me exactly,” Guidali continues, “only this much: A car repair shop in Riva San Vitale committed insurance fraud in several hundred cases.”
Insurance fraud on a grand scale with windshields
According to Blick research, it is about two men who had leased a car repair shop in the town’s commercial area. From there, various insurance companies were billed for damage to hundreds of windshields that didn’t actually exist. Far more windscreens were “replaced” than were officially imported. The serial fraud was exposed. Extensive investigations began in 2018. The men disappeared from Riva San Vitale. The process was completed last year. Each case of fraud was entered as an individual offense in the police statistics. And so the serial scammers Riva San Vitale brought in the new record.
“We didn’t hear anything in the community about the investigations,” explains Antonio Guidali, “nor do we know who the men are.” Peace has now returned to Riva San Vitale. “Our village is sweet and peaceful. And it’s worth a trip», advertises Antonio Guidali. You don’t need a bulletproof vest either, says the Sindaco with a wink.
