Bizarre incident in Schöftland AG: On Thursday evening, a Portuguese († 60) broke into an allotment cottage, was caught and then jumped into an ice-cold stream – despite the minus degrees. The incident happened around 8:30 p.m.
As reported by the cantonal police in Aargau, the patrols immediately began searching for the suspected burglar. At around 9:30 p.m. they sighted the man floating in the creek. However, he did not accept lifelines thrown by the police and no further help.
When the man then went under at a weir in deep water, two police officers secured with ropes climbed into the ice-cold water. They dived for the man and were able to rescue him. Police tried to revive the man, who was no longer responsive, until the emergency services arrived. An ambulance then took him to the hospital in critical condition, where he died later that night.
A short time later, the burglar dies in the hospital. To clarify the cause of death, the public prosecutor ordered an autopsy on the deceased. It is unclear what the intentions of the 60-year-old Portuguese from the region with the alleged break-in in the house. The cantonal police have started their investigation. (dzc)
