The charm of Switzerland! Many Germans think so too. Switzerland remains the most popular emigration destination for Germans in Europe, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday. At the beginning of 2021, around 309,000 German citizens lived in the neighboring country. Compared to 2020, this means an increase of 0.7 percent. The number of Germans in Switzerland has been steadily increasing for years.
Austria takes second place. Around 209,000 Germans lived there in 2021. Compared to 2020, that was four percent more. Possibly the first two places could be explained by the fact that emigration is made easier by the language and the physical proximity. Spain came third with 140,000 Germans.
Switzerland is also ahead when it comes to citizenship: Switzerland was also the European country whose citizenship Germans acquired most frequently. The authorities recorded 6,900 naturalizations in 2020 – a new high. This means that 4.3 percent more Germans took on Swiss citizenship than in 2019. Sweden was far behind in second place with 1,400 naturalizations from Germany.
