Davos is transformed into a high-security wing for five days. The reason: The World Economy WEF starts on Sunday. The authorities explain in a press conference what exactly the Graubünden cantonal police and the Swiss army have planned.
The focus of the annual meeting is the situation in Ukraine. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (44) is to speak to the participants via video transmission.
In addition, Vitali Klitschko (50), the mayor of Kiev, is said to be on site. This will be an important Ukrainian moment, the organizers told the Keystone-SDA news agency last week.
In addition to Selenski and Klitschko, a deputy minister and five parliamentarians are to take part in the discussion on Ukraine. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba (41) is also expected to travel to Davos. Selenski had already been asked to take part in the WEF before the war broke out.
Appearance of the German Federal Chancellor
High Russian officials were not invited. In view of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the WEF had frozen all relations with Russian institutions and, according to its own statements, will not work with any “sanctioned person or institution” at the annual meeting. The WEF therefore adheres to the international sanctions.
In addition to Selenski, the WEF does not come up with really big names. Both US President Joe Biden (79) and Chinese President Xi Jinping (68) will be absent from the event. Biden’s advisors and other officials in his administration will be there in Davos.
On Wednesday, the organizations also announced appearances by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (63) and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (63) via the short message service Twitter. As can be seen from the list of participants published on the same day, Christine Lagarde (66), President of the European Central Bank, will also be there.
The framework agreement is now dead
According to the EU Commission, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (63) will also take part in the WEF – however, EU Deputy Commissioner Maros Sefcovic (55), who is responsible for the “Switzerland” dossier, will not be there. It is still unclear whether von der Leyen will talk specifically to Federal President Ignazio Cassis (61) about relations between Switzerland and the EU.
Compared to the last WEF in January 2020, at which the President of the Commission was able to discuss the institutional framework agreement with the then Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga (62), today’s meeting would be under completely different circumstances: the framework agreement has now been buried and Bern and Brussels are in charge Talks about a new basis for negotiations.
Postponed to May due to Corona
In these talks, however, it seems that they have not come very close, because the EU Commission recently sent Bern a list of questions that they want to have answered in writing. Under these conditions, it is questionable whether a conversation between von der Leyen and Cassis would have any substantial effect – especially since other topics such as Ukraine are currently in the foreground.
The WEF, which normally takes place in January, has been postponed to May due to the corona pandemic. It lasts from May 22nd to 26th. Last year there was no on-site event due to the pandemic. Instead, various online events were held. (SDA)
