Former Federal Councilor Ueli Maurer (72) has a new job: at the beginning of the year he took a seat on the Ethics Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The newspapers of the CH-Media network made this public on Wednesday evening. Ulrich “Ueli” Maurer is listed as a new member on the IOC website. The SVP politician succeeded former Federal Councilor Samuel Schmid (76), who had worked on the ethics committee for twelve years.
Maurer wants to do more sport
Maurer and Schmid were – at least temporarily – responsible for sport in the Federal Council, as head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). After his resignation, Maurer let it be known that he wanted to do more sport again. Now he’s taking a seat in a global sports association.
The IOC Ethics Committee was established in 1999 and consists of nine people, four of whom are IOC members. The body has been chaired by Ban Ki-moon (78), the former UN Secretary-General, since autumn 2017. In addition to drawing up and developing ethical guidelines based on the Olympic Charter, the Commission is also tasked with examining and assessing ethical misconduct. (SDA)
