Usury madness in Basel parking garage because of Swiss Indoors
The Swiss Indoors attract many tennis fans to Basel. And that’s exactly why a shopping center has increased its parking space prices. A Blick reader paid more than for the tennis ticket. How do you explain the shopping center?
Special ticket rates apply in the St. Jakob-Park shopping center during the Swiss Indoors. Prices have gone up significantly.

Parking trouble around the tennis tournament in Basel. If you want to park next to the arena, you have to pay – and how! The shopping center in St. Jakob-Park increased the ticket prices massively due to the major event. A nasty surprise. Also for tennis fan David Rohrer (31) from Kriens LU.
He visited the Swiss Indoors with a colleague on Tuesday. Her car was in the underground car park for eight hours. Cost: 130 francs! Rohrer is shocked when he sees the price. He paid just 85 francs for his admission ticket. “These parking costs are crazy,” he says to Blick.
While the ticket prices in the first three hours, starting at 50 centimes, remain the same as in normal operation, they shoot through the roof afterwards. Four hours cost a whopping 25 francs instead of six. An increase of over 400 (!) percent. An amount of 60 francs is due for five hours – previously 14 francs. From the seventh hour, 20 francs are added.
Every visitor can leave the car park immediately
How does the shopping center explain its pricing strategy? “The tariffs are deliberately set to ensure that the parking spaces remain free for our customers. Experience has shown that an ‘average’ shopping center visit lasts less than four hours,” says center manager Daniel Zimmermann to Blick.
The shopping center also points out that visitors will be explicitly informed about the price increase. “Posters in front of the entrance and stewards at the barrier, who hand out a flyer to every car entering, provide information about the adjusted tariffs. It is possible for every visitor to leave the car park directly without paying.»
This possibility is actively used, as Blick reader Rohrer confirms. “Many drivers left the parking garage quickly.” Because he didn’t know his way around Basel, he saw no other option than biting the bullet. It was worth it. “The tennis experience was gigantic. An unforgettable day.” Probably also thanks to the exorbitant prices in the shopping center.
