The Grand Raid is overshadowed by a fatality. On Saturday morning, a Valais († 36) collapsed as he drove up between Evolène and Volovron. The Valais canton police announced that he had previously become ill.
Those nearby performed a cardiac massage, which was continued by the arriving rescue workers. Despite their efforts, the man died on the spot. He lived in Upper Valais, according to a statement.
The public prosecutor’s office, in cooperation with the cantonal police, has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.
The Grand Raid is the oldest mountain bike marathon in Europe. The event has been held annually since 1990 at the end of August in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Around 3000 starters from 29 nations are taking part. (of)
