Due to the current lack of snow, only around 50 percent of the facilities in the 221 Swiss winter sports resorts are open, according to the snow report from Switzerland Tourism. Nevertheless, ski areas remain confident.
Smaller ski areas in the lower and middle altitudes below 1500 meters above sea level are affected by closures due to lack of snow, in particular the Arc Jurassien and railways in the Prealps, as reported by cable cars Switzerland on Thursday on request. However, the association remains confident that the start of the season was not long ago and that winter is still going on.
Snow comeback this weekend?
Switzerland Tourism sees this immediately – winter has only just begun. The last few years have also shown that the snow is falling increasingly later, and that the so-called “Christmas thaw” could become the norm, it said on request. At the same time, there is usually still enough snow in the large ski areas for “ideal slope conditions” from mid-March to early April.
Some snow is in sight for the weekend. According to SRF Meteo, snow falls on the north side of the Alps and in Valais on Friday from around 1600 meters. On Sunday, the white splendor should also delight snow sports enthusiasts in areas from around 1200 meters.
From Monday it will be changeable, at the beginning of the week the snow line will drop to 1100 to 600 meters according to the weather service. Then it rains again up to 1800 meters. In addition, a stormy wind blows on the mountains. (SDA)
