Another election is due to take place in the United States on Tuesday. Some will ask: again? The runoff election in the US state of Georgia is of great importance for the Republicans, but especially for ex-US President Trump, who dreams of returning to the White House.
A few weeks ago, neither candidate had managed to get the 50 percent Senate seat required by Georgia’s electoral law. Around 11 million residents are now once again called upon to cast their votes at the ballot box.
Georgia will be decided in a runoff
Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock (53) is campaigning for re-election. His challenger, Herschel Walker (60), makes him the Senate seat in dispute.
While Pastor Warnock has a lot of political experience and can count on the support of ex-US President Barack Obama, former football player Walker is still inexperienced on the political stage. Most recently, he attracted attention with strange statements.
However, in southern Georgia, Walker is a hero to some voters because he began his highly successful athletic career with the Bulldogs at the University of Georgia.
Nevertheless, the sporting success cannot hide the long scandal of the American.
Domestic violence, women claiming he paid for them to have an abortion despite his public stance against abortion, and reports of multiple illegitimate children he never cares for. These spicy details from the life of the 60-year-old may not have been particularly good for his popularity ratings.
Herschel Walker is ahead in polls
A Warnock win in the runoff would be a win for incumbent Democratic US President Joe Biden. The decisive factor will be whether the Democrats stay away from the runoff election because of the already secure Senate majority – or not.
In the surveys on the statistics website Fivethirtyeight, challenger Herschel Walker was just ahead with 48 percent. Warnock comes to 47 percent.
Warnock received 49.4 percent of the votes in November, and Walker 48.5 percent. At that time, the Trump camp had already suffered a painful defeat. Governor Brian Kemp was confidently confirmed in office. Herschel Walker, on the other hand, disappointed.
What does the Georgia election mean for Donald Trump?
Kemp is considered Trump’s adversary. The billionaire even ran anti-Kemp advertising. If Walker now loses the runoff, that would be the next setback for Trump – and that even before the campaign for the 2024 presidential election enters the hot phase.
It is striking that Trump has not held a single rally for his party colleague Herschel Walker in the past few weeks. physical presence? none.
Will Trump’s next setback follow?
What seems surprising at first glance could be strategy. Many of the candidates aggressively supported by Trump lost their duels in the midterm elections on November 8 against Democratic competitors. On this front at least, the former US President now appears to be holding back.
Instead, Trump was recently criticized for having dinner with rapper Kanye West (45) and suffered a defeat in court. Will the next defeat follow?
Will DeSantis be the new Republican strongman?
Then Ron DeSantis could finally rise to become the new Republican strongman. Recently, voices in the party have increased, saying that Trump’s time is over.
Conversely, a win by Walker Trump could play into the cards. He could then claim that even meetings with anti-Semites or allegations of rape could not damage his party’s image. Trump would probably sell his party friend’s victory as his own success.
