The number of overnight stays in December 2022 rose by 27.8 percent year-on-year to 2.96 million, according to an initial estimate by the FSO on Monday. Over the whole of 2022, the increase was 28.4 percent to 37.9 million overnight stays.
In the first half of the year in particular, there was a strong recovery compared to the previous year. In the second half of the year, this recovery lost some of its momentum.
Ultimately, however, the local hotels recorded more guests in each month in 2022 than in 2021: January (+71%), February (+41%), March (+60%), April (+25%), May (+38%), June (+59%), July (+23%), August (+8.0%), September (+14.2%) October (+11.1%), November (+20%) and December (+ 38%).
In particular, the hotel industry benefited in 2022 from the fact that more tourists from abroad were drawn back to Switzerland. In December, for example, the number of foreign tourists rose sharply by 67.3 percent compared to the same month last year. In the case of Swiss guests, on the other hand, the increase was significantly lower at +2.7 percent.
