The Swiss hotel industry maintained the recovery course of the past year in December. This means that the number of overnight stays in Swiss hotels in 2022 increased in every month of the year. The picture shows the Sonnenberg hotel complex on the Seelisberg, built in 1875. (Archive)
The number of overnight stays in December 2022 rose by 27.8 percent compared to the previous year, according to an initial estimate by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday.
The development over the whole of 2022 shows that the hotel industry recovered, especially in the first half of the year, compared to the previous year, which was heavily impacted by the corona pandemic.
But there was also a clear recovery in the second half of the year, albeit somewhat weaker: January (+71%), February (+41%), March (+60%), April (+25%), May (+38 %), June (+59%), July (+23%), August (+8.0%), September (+14.2%) October (+11.1%) and November (+20%).
In particular, the local hotel industry benefited again in 2022 from the increasing number of guests from abroad. In December, too, the number of foreign tourists rose by 67.3 percent compared to the same month last year. In the case of Swiss guests, on the other hand, the increase was significantly lower at 2.7.
