Spotlight on the first 14 days of the new year
The forgotten good news
Crises, war and disasters: We live in dangerous times. It is all the more important that the good news does not go under out of sheer shock. Here is a small selection…

Good news for the new year: The ozone holes over the South and North Poles could be closed by 2066.

Admittedly, the media – including the public eye – often overlook the encouraging news because of all the bad news. This is not surprising in times of Putin’s war against Ukraine, the terror of Iran’s mullahs against their own people, the threat of an energy crisis, recession and inflation.
What is overlooked, however, is that many things are developing better than expected, at least in Switzerland:
-
Unemployment is at its lowest in decades. Countless companies are desperately looking for employees. This creates better conditions for the employees. Blick reported on the landlady of the “Lion” in Hausen am Albis ZH: She grants her employees two months of paid vacation.
-
Inflation has peaked. It’s uncomfortable to have to look at every franc. But the latest figures from the USA show that inflation is falling. In December it was lower there than in the whole of last year.
-
The recession is looming – but not in Switzerland. The ETH economic researcher Jan-Egbert Sturm (53) said in view: “There is no threat of recession in Switzerland. It’s a phase of weakness, but on the whole the companies will be able to bridge this weakness well.” Many bosses also learned during the pandemic that it wasn’t very smart to lay off staff at the beginning of the crisis – because then they won’t be able to find anyone for the upswing.
-
It has enough power now. Thanks to warm weather, thanks to rain filling the reservoirs, thanks to repaired French nuclear power plants – and thanks to everyone who saves electricity.
-
Switzerland is on the UN Security Council. And that’s not unproblematic for a neutral country. In this most important international body, Switzerland was able to demonstrate its skills as a mediator right from the start. She worked out a solution for humanitarian aid deliveries in the Syrian war. And he even agreed with Russia.
-
The ozone hole is receding. This surprisingly positive news came right at the beginning of the year: Thanks to the global ban on CFC propellants in refrigerators and aerosol cans introduced in 1987, the ozone-depleting substances in the stratosphere fell by 50 percent. The ozone holes over the South and North Poles could be closed by 2066.
-
Winter is still here. After weeks of much too high temperatures, there was now snow down to medium altitudes. Many small ski areas were able to open, the ski holidays are saved!
Seven good news for the new year – it hasn’t really started yet. We intend to spread all the good news as quickly as possible, on Blick.ch, Blick TV and in Blick!
