Epiphany cake: where is the king?
On January 6, the greed for power will once again become the supreme discipline – and “Corona” (Spanish for crown) will finally appear in a positive context. As every year, several hundred thousand Epiphany cakes go over the counter. They all hide a secret: a plastic king who makes the finder himself a king for a day. Choosing the right piece of cake is therefore crucial. Blick spoke to several master bakers. Some of them revealed their tricks.
Tip 1: Pay attention to the shape of the yeast dough ball.
The king must always be incorporated by hand. This is noticeable in the shape of the yeast dough ball. This usually looks edited. Reaching for the bulkiest piece is therefore not wrong.
Tip 2: Look for puncture sites.
The king is pressed into the raw dough. If the baker fails to cover the puncture site, it remains clearly visible. So a look at the bottom of the cake can help.
Tip 3: Take the smallest piece.
Careful bakers conceal the puncture mark by rolling the dough ball again. This usually makes her appear smaller than the others. Modesty in choosing the piece of cake may be rewarded.
Tip 4: Skip the piece in the middle.
It is an unwritten law that the king is not in the middle of the pie. Most bakers do this. Nevertheless, reaching for the center piece can be worthwhile, as it is usually the largest.
Tip 5: Invoke luck.
Even with the tips of the master bakers, there is no guarantee on the crown. So it doesn’t hurt if you shake hands with a chimney sweep, toss a coin in the fountain and scratch a pig’s belly before choosing the piece of cake. Don’t forget to wash your hands before eating the cake! (mad)
