Urs Remond (58) is happy about what’s going on in Italy at the moment. The Bernese actor has gotten one of the main roles in the new million serial killer series “Fiori sopra l’inferno” (German title: “Ice Cold Hell”) based on the mega bestseller of the same name by Ilaria Tuti (46). “The six-parter for the Rai station is one of the most sensational things I’ve ever shot,” says Remond, “it’s great cinema!”
Elena Sofia Ricci (60), one of the most glamorous film stars in Italy at the moment, plays the title role. Directed by Carlo Carlei (62), who has already brought hits like “Romeo and Juliet” (2013) and “Fluke” (1995) with Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson (74) to the cinemas.
Working abroad since the early 1980s
Urs Remond is currently more in demand abroad than ever, but hardly known here. “Maybe that’s because I haven’t lived here since the early 1980s,” explains the Berliner by choice.
Remond grew up in Africa, where his father was head of the UN refugee agency. The junior attended a missionary boarding school far away from his family. “I only saw them once a year when I could go to them for the summer holidays.”
After returning to Bern, the teenager dreamed of a career as a ballet dancer. But when he was 18, he had a serious motorbike accident. Coma, ICU, broken knee and Achilles tendon. He could forget the dream of ballet. So he decides to act – and is promptly accepted by the state university in Hamburg.
From award-winning movies to TV tearjerkers
After graduation, things go in no time: Remond is hired for the cult series “Die Schwarzwaldklinik” (1986), then for “Otto – The New Film” (1987). “I got off to a flying start,” he recalls. Crime hits such as “Tatort” and “Alarm for Cobra 11”, award-winning cinema films such as “Abendland” or TV tearjerkers continued just as quickly. “If the role is exciting, I also like to make a ‘Rosamunde Pilcher’ film,” he says.
Even during the corona pandemic, when most actors were twiddling their thumbs at home, he had his hands full: Remond set audio books to music in the home studio or offered hypnotherapy. For the latter, he studied for many years after a friend had cancer and he discovered the healing power of hypnosis.
His most prominent leading role to date is that of Dr. Mark Harland in the RTL series “Medicopter 117” (1999-2003). “To this day, I’m still regularly asked about it by fans,” says Remond, who, at 58, still sweats four times a week in the gym. Gamers also know him from the PC game “Battlefield V” (2018), in which he played the leading role. He stood in front of the camera in Hollywood, Canada and half of Europe.
In addition to filming, he and his partner Hanna (50) take care of their son Artur (11), “the most important person in my life”. Or he writes screenplays. “Fortunately, I never had to suffer financially in this uncertain industry,” says Remond. “But you also have to be flexible.” And if necessary, study Italian for months if a new, great role requires this language.
