Twenty shows in eight countries, spread over thirty days and 10,000 kilometers: Gotthard are finally rocking through Europe! Almost every night they perform in front of two to three thousand fans. “It’s fantastic to have normal life back,” says guitarist Leo Leoni (56). “Now we’re back in ‘Heaven’,” he says, referring to his famous ballad.
Gotthard has not given any concerts abroad for more than three years. In 2019 they holed up in the studio to record the album “#13”. When it was recorded in 2020, the corona pandemic broke out. All scheduled shows have been cancelled. Instead of on a big stage, the record launch took place in the practice cellar – and was broadcast virtually. “A week later we all went into lockdown in Switzerland,” Leoni recalls.
“Mood among fans as euphoric as ever”
But now the pandemic has been overcome to some extent, the borders are open again. And so the Ticino musicians can once again fill Germany, France and Italy with sound. “The halls are full, the mood among the fans is as euphoric as ever,” enthuses singer Nic Maeder (50). “Obviously we were missed, which is a very nice feeling.”
Just one thing worries the country’s most successful hard rock band. “We slacked off quite a bit at the after-show parties on this tour,” says Leo Leoni, “we canceled practically all of them.” That doesn’t just have to do with Covid or with the Ukraine war, which puts a lot of strain on her. “But also with the three years that we now have more under our belts,” he grins.
Bassist Marc Lynn (58) promises that the upcoming Swiss gigs will be more hearty. “We will not only go full throttle on stage, but also backstage.”
Giving concerts in Berlin, Paris or Vienna is awesome. “But home games are always something special. Many of our best friends come over to rock out with us,” explains guitarist Freddy Scherer (55). “And after the show, we like to celebratoryly drink one, two, three beers with them.”
